Italian Language Translation

Italian is a Romance language spoken by nearly 63 million people in the world, mostly in Italy. Italian is also one of the four official languages in Switzerland and enjoys the status of the official language in of San Marino and Vatican City. Standard Italian is based on Tuscan dialect and lies somewhere in-between Italo-Dalmatian languages of the South and Northern Italian dialects of the North.

Unlike the majority of other Romance languages, Italian has maintained the contrast between short and long consonants which existed in Latin. Italian is considered to be the closest to Latin, taking after it terms of vocabulary. It is affectionately called il parlar gentile (the gentle language) by its speakers.
